Llantwit Major History Society looks back

In January 1982, Llantwit was highlighted in an article in The Times as it endured one of the heaviest snowfalls in the country.

It was suggested that two million tons of snow fell around the town. There had been another very heavy snowfall four years earlier in 1978.

There were still local dairy farms round the town and Purlon Farm and others were inundated by residents with jugs and cans. Bread was sought after and some pubs were running low of beer.

Farmers were desperately trying to get feed to their stock. The freeze lasted for about 10 days but eventually MoD St Athan were able to open the main road from Barry.

During all this, in the school hall, the intrepid Llantwit Major Pantomime Society managed to present Aladdin to a brave audience.
