When motor cars came to the town
Llantwit Major History Society news
FOR nearly 60 years, Llantwit residents and visitors had the convenience of filling their petrol tanks in the town.
Williams Garage was established in Colhugh Street in the 1930s with a pump (later two) a workshop and car sales. For a time there was another garage at Downcross run by the Sutton brothers and later by Jenkin Elward.
Ivor Williams opened his garage in 1931 and obtained the Austin dealership. He lived in the house next door. He also ran a taxi service and took patients to hospital. He opened on Christmas and Boxing Day for the doctors.

He was followed into the business by his son John who bought the old cattle market behind with an entrance from East Street past the White Lion. The workshops were moved there and the Colhugh Street frontage became a car showroom.
Later, his son Martin joined the firm and they changed to a Toyota dealership and in 1997 moved it to Bridgend
