THE visitors struck in the opening minute of this Division Two West Central league match at Pencoed’s Recreation Ground when a side-stepping run from Cellan Davies took him over, Darren Hodge converting.
The home side dominated territorially in the opening quarter and were held up under the posts on one occasion. Pencoed opened their try count when Tom Geere pounced on a loose Abercrave line-out 45 metres out, handing off the immediate challenge before racing away for a fine opportunist try.
Pencoed scrum half Brandon Mullen then did extremely well to get back in defence to make a try-saving tackle at the corner flag. Both sides swapped penalties through Hodge and Gavin Henson for the home side. Approaching the interval, Hodge increased the Abercrave lead to 8-13 with another penalty.
The home side were somewhat unlucky to trail at the break, having had much the better of things territorially and being held up over the line twice. A Henson half break brought about the next score, supporting centres Shane Izatt and Llyr Harries handling swiftly to put full back Jack Picton over wide out. A try from prop forward Kelvan Ashby then put ‘Aber’ back in front at 13-18. Within a minute, the visitors increased their lead with openside wing forward Luc Gwillym, who had been a thorn in the Pencoed side all afternoon, showing good inside support work to score, Hodge converting.
Pencoed hit back. A break from Izatt took him deep into the visitors’ 22 and from the resultant maul, Zac Taylor drove over, with Henson converting. Abercrave then got their bonus point try through Dewi Pritchard, converted by Hodge. Then, for the third time in the match, Pencoed had a score ruled out and were cruelly denied two match points in this 20-32 loss. Players’ player was Tom Geere and September trainer of month was Wil Hurley.

THIS Youth derby match between two very good teams was a great advertisement for local Youth rugby. Pencoed managed to edge the result thanks to some clever thinking from skipper Iwan Powell resulting in two tries from quick tap penalties while Tondu were expecting them to take the easy three points on offer.
This was an outstanding defensive effort from Pencoed against a much bigger Tondu pack. The scrum and line-out went very well for Pencoed but it was their organised and aggressive defence that paved the way for the win. Pencoed scorers were Powell (two tries, three pens, one conv). Harri Williams-Winn (one try), and Jack Sperduty (one conv). Pencoed MOM in the backs, Iwan Powell, and MOM at forward Sam Watkins.
