Anxious wait in Porthcawl as search goes on for missing woman
LIFEBOATS crews from Barry Dock and Mumbles battled through heavy seas to assist in Porthcawl on Tuesday night after a woman was seen by the water’s edge as Force 10 winds lashed the coastline.
The alarm was raised at 6.40pm and the high seas meant that it was impossible to launch the Porthcawl lifeboat. Coastguard teams from Port Talbot and Llantwit Major rushed to assist, and the rescue helicopter from St Athan was on the scene quickly, training its searchlight on the coastline.
The lifeboat search continued until after midnight until the weather deteriorated further. The Mumbles Lifeboat was stood down at 00.50 and coxswain Josh Stewart described the conditions as the worst his crew members were ever likely to face.
In the morning, the search was resumed in better weather as the winds dropped. A South Wales Police spokesperson said: “HM Coastguard is continuing the maritime search effort with assistance from our specialist search team and other agencies.”
As the Glamorgan Star went to press, the search was still continuing.
