At last! – Barry woman receives her children’s care award
A BARRY woman has finally been presented with her trophy after being named ‘Volunteer of The Year 2020’ by Early Years Wales.
Gemma Lees, the manager of Gibbonsdown Children’s Centre, explained that the delay was a result of the Covid situation but that, at long last, Pat Moreton had received her accolade.
Gemma told the Glamorgan Star: “Pat has worked at Gibbonsdown Childrens Centre in Barry for 21 years, starting as a worker and then joining us as a volunteer after her retirement.
“Pat has been such an inspiration to the children and staff. She brought in her own bags of exciting toys, telling magical stories and doing new and exciting activities.
“She has always been fantastic with children who need extra support. She is so patient and understanding of what children need and want. No matter if a child is upset, angry or just wanting some attention, Pat knows how to keep them happy and entertained.
“Watching Pat play with the children is a joy. She is always surrounded by children who can’t wait to see what exciting new things she has in store – we call her our very own Pied Piper!
“Pat has been a big part of the community for a long time. Before she came to Gibbonsdown Children’s Centre she was a committee member of the community centre when it first opened in 1977. She ran the Highlight Park Playgroup and has worked in several settings with children with Additional Learning Needs.
“We are thrilled that Pat won the award and we can’t think of anyone more deserving! Since Covid Pat has decided to stop volunteering here and we are sad to see her go. She is such a hard-working, dedicated and kind person who has made a big difference to so many children’s lives.
“Thank you Pat, you will be missed.”
