Barry author remembers his old school.
Staff and children at Gladstone Primary School in Barry have thanked local author Paul Rebane for buying new sets of reading books for the school.
Last year, Paul was encouraged by a friend to write his first book, This Old Heart of Mine: Reflections of a Soulboy – a collection of Paul’s memories of growing up and life in and around Barry – aiming to get it published by his 70th birthday.
Paul is a former pupil, parent and governor at Gladstone. Because of these links with the school, together with his own career in teaching, Paul generously donated proceeds from the sale of his memoir, buying new sets of books – all chosen from this year’s Yoto Kate Greenaway Medal shortlist.
They will be used across Gladstone during group guided reading sessions to complement the school’s existing reading scheme, to develop the love of reading and to promote discussion.
Paul said: “I wanted to do something with the book and it made sense to do something that is educational – donating to Gladstone completed the circle of my life in education.”
