Centurions grab away win in local derby

SULLY Centurions First XI took the short journey to Dinas Powys and came away with maximum points.
After being put in to bat, Centurions were soon up against it when Tom Davies went for just one. Centurions’ skipper David Goodway and Ricki Griffett put on 39 for the next wicket before Ricki was bowled by Mullins for 19. The score became 48 for 3 when Lloyd Bruce fell for a duck. However, this brought together Goodway and Jake Griffett, who shared a wonderful fourth wicket partnership of 157.
Goodway, playing his usual carefully put together knock, was the perfect support for Griffett, who took a shine to the home attack, hitting seven fours and four sixes before being bowled by Fernando for 94. Goodway’s innings came to an end 24 runs later, when he was caught and bowled by Fernando for a well-made 76. Nick Jones (16) and Ben Spear (20 not out) enjoyed themselves at the back end of the innings, while taking the score along to 265 for 6 after the allotted 40 overs.
In reply, Dinas suffered an early setback when De Mauro was caught by Nathan Cuddihy off the bowling of Goodway, to leave the score at 15 for 1 in the fourth over. But Dawson (who hit seven fours and one six in his score of 40) and Thotage, added 65 before Dawson was bowled by Cuddihy in the 16th over. Thotage was caught by Ricki Griffett off the bowling of Bruce for Dinas’ top score of 44, with the score on 98 for 3. But, of the rest of the batsmen, only Fernando reached double figures (12) as the wickets began to tumble.
The last seven fell for 31, as the Sully attack took a grip on proceedings. Cuddihy, bowling his eight overs straight through, ended with figures of 4-31. Jake Griffett followed his 94 with 3 for 9 off just three overs. Bruce (2-28) and Goodway (1-16) were the other wicket takers as Centurions ended up winners by 136 runs.
This leaves the First XI in third place in the league table.
Dinas Powys 129 all out, Sully Centurions 265-6
THE second XI hosted Porth at Burnham Avenue, with a side that was missing some regulars. Batting first, Centurions lost Rukshan Silva for 4, with the score on just 6. The second wicket partnership of Zia Gehlan and skipper Dan Merchant shared 56 runs before Zia was caught and bowled by Edwards for 30. Merchant and Alex Kelsey then took the score along to 92 when Merchant became the first of Guy’s four victims, being bowled for 35. Kelsey went for 27 in the 27th over, with the only other contribution of note being Imran Ahmed’s 24 not out, as wickets tumbled around him. The final score was 163 all out in the 38th over.
After tea, in spite of losing Williams in the sixth over (bowled by Imran Ahmed for 8) Atkinson and Powell shared a stand of 128. Powell, who hit six fours in his score of 48, was eventually trapped lbw by Merchant. Merchant also took the wicket of Engerer a couple of overs later. However, the impressive Atkinson ended on 85 not out (a knock that included 14 boundaries) as Porth cruised to a seven wicket victory with four overs remaining.
Despite this setback, the Second XI are still in second place in the league as we enter the final month of the season with everything to play for.
