SPORT – Barry at a ‘turning point’ after good performance at Porth

TEAM manager Mike Prosser praised what he described as a “committed performance” from Barry on Saturday, saying: “Nobody left anything in the changing room, everybody gave 100 per cent. You can’t ask for more than that.”

This was quite a turn round from when the teams last met back in October, when Porth won 32-5 at the Reservoir Field. This time, Barry picked up a losing bonus point, and could so easily have come away with more.

Consistency is what Barry have been struggling with this season, and Saturday was the first time since September the Bombers were able to field a team as originally selected in midweek. Selection issues and injuries, exacerbated by pitch problems, have been a challenge since the start of the season.

Prosser senses the team is at a turning point. “Strategically the boys know exactly what needs doing, and now they are starting to implement it,” he said. “We are out of ‘batten down the hatches’ mode and looking to win a few of the forthcoming games.”

Eight of Barry’s remaining 12 league games are at home.

“Saturday was about fine margins. There were occasions when we had the ball in attack situations and we were just a little bit rushed,” said Prosser. “Our scrum put them under pressure in the first half, and we should have had a penalty try. But to come away from Porth with a losing bonus point is good.”

Barry scored two tries, through Danny Ryan from a set piece, and Josh Trewartha from broken play. Einan Scott converted one and landed a penalty. Prosser made Dafydd Jones his man of the match, praising his impressive jackaling and tackling.

But Prosser emphasised the team effort. “We probably improved 10-15 per cent on the previous week, and we didn’t start cold this week. They worked well together. They are getting their confidence back.”

Barry are home to Abercynon on Saturday, 20th January (2.30pm) on the 4G Ysgol Bro Morgannwg pitch. The Youth team travel to Merthyr for the opening fixture of their Cardiff Regional National Premiership campaign.
