Barry game will double up as Cup and League fixture
SPORT |
Barry RFC will be back in action at the Reservoir Field on Saturday when they take on Rhiwbina in the quarter-final of the Mallett Cup.
The match doubles as an Admiral National League Division One East Central fixture, postponed from the original scheduled date of January 15 because of Covid in the Rhiwbina squad.
That match was due to be played at Rhiwbina, but with the clubs agreeing to play both cup and league fixture as one game, it has been switched to Barry as the Bombers were drawn at home in the cup.
Rhiwbina lie seventh in Division One East Central, with Barry 10th. Dinas Powys await the winners in the semi-final, which will be played on a neutral venue on a date to be agreed.
The Mallett Cup is the oldest cup competition in Wales and, apart from war years, has been held every year since 1894, with Barry one of the 15 clubs entering the inaugural competition. There have now been two more lost years due to Covid.
The cup was presented to the Cardiff and District Football Union in 1893 by Thomas Henry Mallett, licensee of the Blue Bell, later the Goat Major, in Cardiff, and president of the Union.
Since 2018 it has become the senior cup for the East District Rugby Union.
