BARRY’S scratch side may have been beaten, but it was a day to remember, not just for the players on the Principality Stadium pitch, but for everyone from the club’s Girls’ Hub who was involved.
Availability issues meant the Islanders had to field a mixed under-18s and under-16s side. “Our girls hadn’t trained together, or played together,” said Hub lead Jo Eveleigh, “but they just gelled as a team. It was a great experience for them.
“We said to the girls ‘enjoy it as you may never get to play here again’. We didn’t expect to win, but watching the girls go out on the Principality pitch with smiles on their faces was a win for us.
“The whole game day, from start to finish, was really good. We really involved the Hub,” said Eveleigh, “with the whole Hub being involved in the planning and organising. We had loads of support from all the other age groups.”
The Timberwolves, all under-18s, ran in five tries, two converted, to lead 29-5 at the interval. Islanders’ skipper Macey Phillips drove over from close range for Barry’s first half points.
The second half was much tighter, with Riley Stanger cutting the deficit after taking a quick tap penalty, before the Timberwolves added another couple of tries.
The Go.Compare player of the match award went to Maxine Yeobah of the Islanders.
“The fact that the WRU are recognising women in rugby more, and putting on these events is good,” said Eveleigh. “The WRU have come such a long way. It’s good to have them supporting the girls.”
