BARRY under-16s started the new year with a decent win over a physical Pontypridd at the historic ground, Sardis Road.
Ponty set their stall out early, with solid defence and powerful scrum, and it was clear it wasn’t going to be an easy afternoon for Barry. However, with an efficient lineout and some pace out wide, Barry were soon 12-0 up, full back Tom Halliday grabbing both early tries, showing how deadly he can be with ball in space, the first converted by scrum half Cam Hughes.
Ponty then upped their physicality, and their possession eventually broke down Barry’s organised defence with a converted try for a 7-12 half-time score. The hosts came out fired up after the interval, and Barry’s defence had to be solid to deny them.
Once Barry finally got some possession and territory, they were rewarded with No 8 Max O’Sullivan forcing his way over from close range to add to the lead. After that, Barry settled down and started to play a more expansive handling game, with credit going to Cam Hughes and Lloyd Beer at 9 and 10 for seeing the space and using it.
The last 15 minutes saw Barry take complete control, with Tom Halliday grabbing his third, before Max O’Sullivan got his second, rounding off a fantastic team move. The scoring was completed by open side flanker Reuben Williams, following a 50m break from second row Sam Thomas.
Barry will have to be at their best when they host a very strong St Albans side on Sunday, 19th January, at the Reservoir Field.
