Barry Wanderers CC returned to winning ways in the league on Saturday, beating Creigiau Seconds by 217 runs to stay top of South East Wales Cricket League Division 8.
After winning the toss, Creigiau opted to bowl first on a slow and low track. Creigiau’s accurate bowling made life difficult for openers Neil Blundell and Sam Harris but they made steady progress, putting on 44 in the first 13 overs. Harris was out caught for a well-crafted 27, which brought Felix Kite to the crease.
Along with the consistently excellent Blundell, Kite took the game to Creigiau in what would turn out to be a game-defining partnership. The pair mixed hard running with belligerent boundary hitting and despite the difficult conditions, they expertly upped the scoring rate. They would eventually put on 172 runs together before Blundell fell in the 33rd over for a superb 83 with the score on 227 for 2 in the 33rd over. Kite reached a remarkable century before being bowled for 106 in the 36th over. The middle order did not let up and seeking a plus-270 score, they pushed hard for runs, eventually driving the Wanderers onto 276-6 from their 40 overs.
With the pitch getting slower and lower, the Creigiau batters had an immense challenge in front of them. Sudhee Surendran Nair (1-6) and Luke Grant (1-7) opened the bowling and provided few scoring opportunities. They were rewarded with a wicket each in the first 10 overs with the score on just 9. Captain Ram was unlucky not to bag a couple of wickets in his spell but he provided magic elsewhere by throwing the ball to man of the moment Kite. His miserly spell of off spin bowling gutted the Creigiau middle order, which included the wicket of the dangerous O’Hanlon (30) with help from a fine catch from Adi Tamatham. Kite (5-17) along with an excellent three-over bowling cameo from Gito John (3-5) ended the Creigiau resistance in the 26th over, all out for 59. They were supported by fine catches from Abhilash Rammohan, Nair and a sharp stumping from Daf Howells.
It was in the end a dominant 217-run win for the Wanderers on a difficult pitch to bat on, inspired by man of the match Kite with the rare double of a century and a five-wicket haul.
