Three out of three for Wanderers as they notch another win

Barry Wanderers CC continued their fine run of form on Saturday, 14th May, with an 84-run win over Ponthir 2nds in the South East Wales Cricket League Division 8. Due to work being carried out at Ponthir’s ground, the match was played at Blaina CC.
The wicket had several grassy patches on it and the possible variable bounce persuaded the Ponthir skipper to field first after winning the toss. Neil Blundell and Peter Coleman opened the Wanderers’ innings and were made to work hard, as the bounce was indeed variable. A feature of the Wanderers season so far has been the opening batsmen laying down a solid platform for the innings.
Blundell and Coleman provided this yet again, putting on 90 in the first 16 overs with the ball doing plenty. Blundell made full use of the short boundary with his trademark wristy cover drives but he was eventually dismissed caught and bowled for a sublime 57. Coleman continued to anchor the innings and with support from Abhilash (6) and Sudhee Surendran Nair (23) the Wanderers went past the 132 mark after 24 overs. Coleman’s key innings ended after being bowled for a very valuable 33 which brought Aditya Tamatham and skipper Ram to the middle.
Tamatham, in his unique but effective style, plundered 30 important runs in no time and Ram ran his partner hard to take every single on offer. Ram continued to push hard for runs and his excellent 38no (supported by Jack Williams, 2 and Daf Howells, 4no) was vital in allowing the Wanderers to post 226-6 from 40 overs.
Nair (2-31) gave the Wanderers a superb start, removing two Ponthir batters in his first two overs. Ram was unlucky not to take the wicket of Williams after Daf Howells spilled an edge behind the stumps. Williams (44) went onto strike some lusty blows, keeping Ponthir up with the required rate with 54-2 posted in the first 10 overs before J Williams (2-15) bowled him with a peach of a delivery. James Scullion went wicketless in a tidy spell and after Ram was rewarded with the wicket of Simms, lbw for 3, Ponthir (at 94-4 after 17 overs) the match looked finely poised.
The Wanderers however, kept pegging Ponthir back with regular wickets. Williams’ hostile spells nabbed him 2-15 and Luke Grant (2-14) helped clean up the tail. There was some resistance from Poyner (21 no) and Walsh (21) but Gito John (2-19) finished the innings off in the 30th over with an excellent delivery. Ponthir ended their innings on 142 all out. Another excellent performance by the Wanderers in the field.
