Barry Wanderers start season with emphatic win

Barry Wanderers CC began their South-East Wales Cricket League Division 8 campaign in fine style on Saturday, 30th April, with a 200-run win away to Rogerstone Welfare CC 2nd XI.
Wanderers captain Ram won the toss and elected to bat first on what looked like an excellent pitch. Sam Harris and Neil Blundell opened the innings and the pair showed their attacking intent from the first over. With Harris’ belligerent hitting through the covers and Blundell finding plenty of gaps on the leg side, the score raced briskly to 52 after 10 overs.
Harris looked to push the score on before drinks at the 20-over mark but mistimed a lofted straight drive into the hands of the Rogerstone long on, out for an excellent 49 with the score on 95. Abhilash joined Blundell in the middle and picked up where Harris left off with some brutal hitting all around the ground. Blundell and Abhilash shared a partnership of 101 runs, taking the Wanderers to 188 off 27 overs before Blundell was out caught for a magnificent 68. Abhilash’s fine innings came to an end soon after, out bowled for 60.
Kunal Mhadgut and Aditya Tamatham kept the pressure on, adding 74 runs between them, working the ball around nicely and taking advantage of the short boundary. The spin of Collier pegged the Wanderers back with the wickets of Mhadgut (42) and Tamatham (32) and there was some cheer for Rogerstone with the removal of Sudhee Surendran Nair (bowled for one) and Gito John (run out for 0). Captain Ram finished with 6 not out and with extras making a significant contribution (35), the innings finished on 293 for 7 off 40 overs.
In the face of an imposing target, Rogerstone needed to score freely but Wanderers’ opening bowling pair of Nair and Ram made life difficult for the batters. Ram was unlucky not to make the first breakthrough with keeper Daf Howells not able to hang on to a thin edge. Howells made amends shortly afterwards, snaffling a wide nick from Hughes (8) off the bowling of Jack Williams.
Nair and Williams kept the pressure on with some excellent tight bowling attacking the stumps and wickets started to fall in quick succession. Rogerstone limped to 32 for 6 after 13 overs with three wickets each for Williams and Nair (helped by an excellent catch from Abhilash in the covers). From this point on, Rogerstone fought back a bit with Matthew and Collier guiding their side to 69 after 23 overs. The resistance came to an end after the off spin of Harris removed both Collier (for 15 edged to Howells) and Matthew (bowled for 28). Rogerstone were eventually all out for 92 in the 29th over, well short of the Wanderers total.
