Bells will ring out again in Llanmaes

Church appeared in the fictional BBC wedding of Gavin and Stacey

THE Church of St Catwg in the village of Llanmaes has three ancient bells, one of which is the oldest bell in the diocese of Llandaff, dated 1399 AD.

The bells have not been struck for many years and were removed from the bell frame when the church tower was strengthened 14 years ago. After many years of planning and fundraising by the village to enable the bells to be heard again, they were finally removed from the church on Thursday 28th September.

| The church bells were handled with care.

Under the watchful eye of church wardens Jeffrey Robinson and Kerry Veale, each bell was carefully lowered from the bell tower and taken outside the church for the first time in centuries. The bells were then transported to a specialist firm in Bridport, Dorset, to be retuned and cleaned. They are due to return home in December so that they can be heard once again in the village over the Christmas period and on future occasions.

St Catwg’s Church is part of the Glamorgan Heritage Coast Ministry Area, and the church has become internationally famous as the venue for the fictional wedding of Gavin and Stacey in the hit BBC TV comedy.
