FIVE primary schools in the Vale have been recognised as ‘Schools of Sanctuary’ – an award for “creating welcoming, inclusive environments where every child feels safe, valued and able to thrive”.
The latest schools to achieve the nationally recognised award are:
1/ St David’s CIW Primary School.
2/ St Joseph’s RC Primary School.
3/ St Illtyd Primary School.
4/ Ysgol Y Ddraig Primary School.
5/ Pendoylan CIW Primary School.
A Vale Council spokesperson said: “The Schools of Sanctuary award recognises schools that go above and beyond to foster a culture of welcome, understanding and belonging.
“The programme recognises that many children may experience upheaval or need extra support when adjusting to a new environment – whether they are from military families relocating to the area, have recently arrived in the UK after fleeing conflict or difficult circumstances, are entering care, or are facing other significant changes in their lives.
“To achieve the award, schools must demonstrate their commitment by helping pupils, staff and the wider community better understand the experiences of people whose lives have been disrupted, while embedding inclusive practices across school life.

Cllr Rhiannon Birch, the Vale Council cabinet member for Education, Arts and the Welsh Language, said: “Schools play a vital role in helping children feel safe, respected and included. By becoming Schools of Sanctuary, these schools have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to creating welcoming environments where every pupil can flourish and feel safe.
“We are incredibly proud to support schools that promote kindness, compassion and understanding, helping to build stronger, more inclusive communities for everyone.”
