Blundell blasts century in 93-run win for Barry Wanderers
SPORT | Cricket:
Barry Wanderers CC made it two wins from two in the league on Saturday, beating Glangrwyney CC by 93 runs in South East Wales Cricket League Division 8.
On a fine day for batting, captain Ram won the toss and opted to make first use of the Hayes Point track. The Wanderers got off to a flyer with opening bat Peter Coleman punishing any sort of width from the Glangrwyney bowlers as they struggled to find their line early on. Coleman and Neil Blundell at the other end peppered the boundary and ran hard between the wickets to push the score past 100 in the 17th over. Coleman’s excellent innings came to an end just after drinks, bowled by Chaudary for 54. With pace off the ball, Chaudary along with Morgan and Weldeck for Glangrywney forced the Wanderers to work harder for their runs.
Wristy stroke play from Blundell, ably supported by Abhilash (12) and Kunal Mhadgut (33), took the Wanderers past 200 in the 34th over. Blundell kept the pressure on and, along with Aditya Tamatham and skipper Ram (both 16 not out), the Wanderers added 63 runs in the final six overs. Blundell, the architect of the innings, was eventually dismissed lbw for a magnificent 115, which enabled the Wanderers to finish on 268-4.
Glangrwyney made an excellent start to their innings and were clinical in putting away any bad balls on offer. They raced to 63 from the first 10 overs before first change bowler Luke Grant provided the breakthrough bowling Devoy for 29. This brought Welldeck Jnr to the crease and he confidently took the Wanderers to task with some brutal clean hitting. 100 was reached in the 14th over and Weldeck was ominously looking like seeing Glangrwyney home with ease. Ram had other ideas however, and dismissed the danger man lbw for 41.
Only another 75 runs were added in the remainder of the innings thanks to Gito, who bowled a miserly spell (6.1-0-4-13) from the hospital end. Gito varied his pace well on a slow and low surface and was duly rewarded with four Glangrwyney wickets. He was supported by Blundell with two wickets, Sudhee Surendran Nair chipping in with one and skipper Ram finished with two, helped by an excellent catch by Abhilash at deep cover. Man of the match however was the in-form Blundell who added a catch (off Gito’s bowling) to his other contributions in the match. Glangrwyney CC finished on 175 all out after 28 overs, Barry Wanderers winning by 93 runs.
