Extra-ordinary meeting called over Biomass facility

The Mayor of Barry has taken to social media to announce an ‘extra-ordinary meeting’ will be taking place early next week, Monday 10th January.

Cllr Steffan William’s statement reads: “As Mayor of Barry I’ve called an extraordinary meeting to discuss the [BiomassUK] retrospective incinerator consultation on Monday night.

“I’ve ensured that the public can also take part. Please email if you’d like an invitation & let us know if you wish to speak.”

Biomass is a term given to any renewable fuel created from naturally occurring organic materials, in this case, waste wood chip. The facility would produce 10MWe of renewable electricity, which will go into the Local Distribution Network or grid. Biomass UK claim that this would be enough to power 23,000 households.

Campaigners have fought against the wood incinerator for years due to possible pollution fears.

The full council meeting is believed to be taking place at 7.00pm with further details available from Barry Town Council.
