Star reporter remembered at Cardiff Half Marathon
There were thousands of people out on the streets of Cardiff on Sunday, 27th March, some running to test themselves, while others were running for a charity or to remember a loved one.
Last year, Glamorgan Star’s reporter, Sharon Harris, died suddenly and among the runners, there were friends who included her in their thoughts.
Sharon’s sister, Julie Williams, was running as part of a team who were fundraising for the Hospice of the Valleys in Ebbw Vale. However, on a personal level she remembered her sister throughout the run – appropriate as Sharon regularly took part in half marathons and marathons around the world.
Another friend of Sharon’s was Steffan Wiliam, who is coming to the end of his year in office as Barry Town Mayor. He completed the half marathon in 2 hours 31 minutes and dedicated the race to Sharon.
He said: “I’m delighted to have raised money for Tŷ Hafan Children’s Hospice, The Vale Foodbank and the Barry Dock RNLI – a charity which was so close to Sharon’s heart.”
He added: “This has been a wonderful experience and the half marathon itself was a very pleasant run indeed. As a boy from Barry, I was used to training by running up Ship Hill and doing bunny hops up the Golden Stairs. The Cardiff course is very flat and veasy to run in comparison. My aim now is to raise a lot of money by running a bet that I can do it in under 2 hours next time!”
Wendy Snatchfold worked alongside Sharon on the Glamorgan Star and she too remembered her colleague as she participated in the half marathon. Wendy was delighted with a finishing time of two hours, 28 minutes, as she had been injured and only recently returned to training.
She said: “It was a fantastic event, with so many people on the roadside clapping and cheering, and bands playing at regular intervals. The atmosphere was great.”
