Giant of local newspaper world dies aged 95

There was great sadness here at the Glamorgan Star when the news was announced over the weekend that Sir Ray Tindle – a great champion of local journalism – had passed away at the age of 95.

Sir Ray was the proprietor of the Glamorgan Gem and, although the Glamorgan Star is totally independent, three of the staff here spent 20 years or more with that newspaper.

Sir Ray was a true believer in local newspapers and he encouraged all the papers in his Tindle News group to follow his vision. Famously, he started his first newspaper with his ‘demob’ money when World War II ended – and he never wavered from pursuing his passion.

Attracta Astley, the managing director of the Glamorgan Star, said: “Sir Ray was a true gentleman and an outstanding newspaper man.

“Prince Charles once said of Sir Ray ‘His wisdom, kindness, integrity and business acumen mark him out as one of the great media men of his generation, a unique legend in his own lifetime’.

“I am proud and privileged to have known and worked for Sir Ray at Tindle Newspapers for over 25 years and latterly as Wales & Borders Managing Director which included the Glamorgan Gem.

“He was a one off. A light has gone out in the world.

“Myself and the team at the Glamorgan Star send our sincerest condolences to the Tindle family.”
