Sport – Sully Centurions Firsts get their ducks in a row
SULLY Centurions First XI’s up and down season continues.
Prior to the weekend, they had won one, lost two and tied one. However, to call Saturday’s match at home to Blaina a defeat, would be something of an understatement.
After being asked to bat by Blaina, Centurions soon lost their first wicket, with just one run on the board. The second wicket soon followed, as did the third. In fact, wickets kept tumbling, as a string of batsmen fell. The final scorecard showed seven ducks and only two players reaching double figures (Gabe Howard, 14 not out and Nathan Cuddihy 11) as Sully were skittled 43 all out in just 16 overs. Blaina’s opening bowlers, Lane and Hartland, both picked up five wickets.
The visitors’ reply was even shorter, as they took just six overs to reach the target, with no loss of wicket. This was truly one to forget!
Sully Centurions 43 all out, Blaina 44-0
The Second XI travelled to St Fagans and made a good start, having the hosts at 28-4 at one stage, with two wickets each for Imran and Ansh. St Fagans had progressed to 44-4 in the 10th over when the teams had to go off for what turned out to be a lengthy rain break.
On resumption, the home side continued their comeback, with Deverell and Hussain taking the score to 77, before Deverell fell to Sonu for 23. Hussain and Khan then shared an exciting partnership, as the Sully bowlers struggled to find some consistency. The breakthrough came when Gorsia had Hussain caught for a well-made 52, with the score on 131. As so often happens, once the partnership was broken another wicket fell pretty quickly as Janczewski was dismissed with the score on 133-7. But, in spite of heroic efforts in the field, the home side continued to amass runs, with the score reaching 224, thanks, mainly to a half century from Khan, who was the last man out. For Centurions, bowling honours went to Amrik Ansh (3-34) Imran Ahmed (2-41) and Jagdish Gorsia (2-35)
After the break Sully got off to a nightmare start, when skipper Zia Gehlan was out first ball. The innings took on a similar feel to St Fagans’ as wickets fell regularly to leave Centurions on 50-5. Then Sonu and Imran shared a productive partnership of 81 to give Sully some hope. Howeverm the late order didn’t hang around long enough to support Imran, who was stumped on 52, with the final score being a disappointing 137 all out.
Bonelle and Khaliq, with three wickets each, were the home side’s standout bowlers.
St Fagans III 224 all out, Sully Centurions II 137 all out
This weekend the First XI travel to Lisvane, while the Second XI entertain Miskin Manor at Burnham Avenue.
