For those in the know, the annual show from the Bridgend Youth Theatre (BYT) has always been a bit special.

So special, in fact, that talented young performers from outside the county have signed up to get involved – and this year there is a strong Cowbridge connection.

In leading roles are Rihanna Hogg and Lili Mohammad – two singers who have been guest performers with Cowbridge Male Voice Choir on several occasions – and they have very different roles in this year’s show – the bloodthirsty musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

Lily, the daughter of BBC TV’sJason Mohammed, plays the comic role of the evil Mrs Lovett, while Rihanna plays the innocent Johanna, who must be rescued from the creepy Judge Turpin.

Although the BYT have been invited to perform at Sherman Theatre in Cardiff in the past, Sweeney Todd is being staged at their regular home, theGrand Pavilion, Porthcawl. Due to Covid, it is their first show in two years.

Sweeney Todd is a musical thriller, full of soaring beauty, pitch-black comedy and stunning terror. It tells the tale of a barber who returns to London after 15 years of exile to take revenge on the corrupt judge who ruined his life. When revenge eludes him, Sweeney swears vengeance on the entire human race, murdering as many people as he can; while his business associate Mrs Lovett bakes the bodies into meat pies and sells them to the unsuspecting citizens of London.

Sweeney Todd is at the Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl, from Friday 25th to Sunday 27th February. Performances at 7.30pm each evening, with a matinee on Sunday, 2.30pm. Tickets are priced from £10 and are on sale now at www.grandpavilion.co.uk.
