IN a thrilling encounter at The Bear Field, Cowbridge FC faced off against Ely Rangers FC Reserves in a match that had everything: goals, drama, and even a late red card to spice things up.
The action kicked off with Ely Rangers quickly taking the lead with a well-placed shot that caught the Cowbridge defence napping.
However, Cowbridge responded with remarkable tenacity. Just minutes later, Ben Cooke levelled the score, capitalising on a beautiful assist from Marc Mathias.
Ely were not ready to back down, and they quickly regained the lead, putting Cowbridge on the back foot once again. But the home side refused to be outdone. In a dramatic turn of events, Lloyd Lewis found the net, equalising just before the half-time whistle.
Both teams retreated to strategise, with Cowbridge looking to tighten their defence and Ely eager to maintain their attacking momentum. The second half resumed with Ely regaining their lead with an early goal. The home side, however, responded with determination. Luke Pinchbeck, perhaps feeling the heat of the moment, received a yellow card for a rather enthusiastic challenge that had the crowd gasping.
But Pinchbeck didn’t let that deter him. In a moment of redemption, he converted a penalty later in the half, making it 3-3. As the match approached its dying moments, it seemed both teams were destined to share the spoils. But in a stunning last-minute twist, Joe Watts scored the winning goal for Cowbridge, assisted by none other than the Viking—their goalkeeper – who launched a long kick forward. The crowd erupted, celebrating a goal that felt like it had been scripted for a movie.
As the dust settled, tensions flared, and an Ely player received a red card in the post-match proceedings, adding a little extra drama to an already thrilling day.
Marc Mathias was named man of the match for his pivotal role, providing the crucial assist for Cowbridge’s equaliser and constantly pressuring the Ely defence.
Cowbridge FC will look to carry this momentum into their next match against Cadoxton Imps AFC on Saturday, 12 October at 2pm on The Bear Field.
