Pencoed RFC welcomed Builth Wells RFC and Rhys Clarke opened the scoring for Pencoed with a penalty goal in the fifth minute.

The visitors soon responded through Geth Davies to level matters from the tee. Home No 8 Ashley Bissett then did well, sliding in the difficult conditions to clean up a loose ball. A driving lineout gave ‘The Bulls’ the lead, hooker Rhodri Jones getting the touchdown. After a strong scrummage, Davies added a penalty goal to stretch the visitors’ lead to 3-11.

Bissett was again to the fore with a well-timed tackle to snuff out a threat. The visitors then picked up a yellow card and Pencoed were extremely unlucky in losing the ball in the act of scoring. Further sustained pressure got its reward, with young second row Luke Hall doing well to charge down an attempted Builth clearance to get the touchdown, Clarke unfortunately hitting the upright with the conversion.

The second half began with the sun at last shining but this did very little for underfoot conditions. Pencoed then conceded a ‘soft’ score – a couple of defensive errors gifting scrum half Davies a try. A similar pattern began to develop with Pencoed applying pressure through the phases until errors crept in. The resultant scrums allowed the Bulls to regroup and take the pressure off.

In the dying seconds, Pencoed had more cruel luck when, for the second time in the match, they lost possession in the act of scoring, denying them the losing bonus point which at the very least their efforts deserved.

For Pencoed, skipper Rhys Bargery led by example and was voted Pencoed player of the match. Also prominent in the pack were young forwards Lewis Bevan, Bissett, Hall, Josh Richards, and Jack Walker, with the more seasoned prop forward James Tredray making a most welcome return to the rigours of the front row.

Pencoed now have a few weeks off from league action due to the Six Nations and will return to action at this level on the 19th February at Ystradgynlais.
