GAVIN & STACEY: Last waltz for Barry girl and Essex boy

THE STARS OF GAVIN & STACEY were spotted on Barry Island when filming of the last ever episode got underway earlier this week.

The BBC announced on Monday, 2nd September, that filming had begun for the grand finale, which will air on Christmas Day.

It shared a photo of a clapperboard, dated 2nd September, which read, “Gavin & Stacey: The Finale” alongside a caption that said: “Oh. My. Christ,” a reference to a phrase often used by Pam, played by Alison Steadman. It continued: “The final episode of Gavin & Stacey started filming today. Truth be told, we’re a little bit excited.”

The same day, James Corden hinted on his Instagram account that filming had already begun by posting a behind the scenes photo of his character Smithy’s blue Volvo with the message “Day 1. Here we go x”.

The BBC’s Gavin & Stacey was last seen on TV in 2019 when over 18 million viewers were left wanting more following a Christmas day special cliffhanger ending with Nessa, played by Ruth Jones, getting down on one knee and proposing to Smithy played by fellow co-writer James Corden. But did he accept?

The show’s co-creator James Corden, who also plays Smithy, uploaded a photo to Instagram on Tuesday that appeared to show Joanna Page and Ruth Jones facing away from the camera in front of O’Shea’s Fish & Chip Café in character as Stacey and Nessa with the caption, “Day 2. One last time on the island x.”

On Tuesday, Joanna Page who plays Stacey West in the hit BBC show spoke to a large crowd of fans gathering on Barry Island’s beach close to where filming was taking place. When Page asked them whether they were all having a good time the response was a resounding ‘Yesssss’.

Several speculating onlookers pondered over the possibility of whether ‘Stacey’ could be pregnant or not in the upcoming final Christmas day special. But with all of the guessing and presumptions over whether she is or not, or if Nessa and Smithy do actually tie the knot, or even if the mystery of that ‘disastrous fishing trip’ will be revealled, then we will all have to wait and see until Christmas.

Members of the 11th Barry Sea Scout Group took the opportunity to grab a quick photo and chat with Ruth Jones after spotting her in the popular Marco’s cafe on Barry Island’s promenade on Sunday, 1st September. Ruth was happy to pose for a photo with Sea Scout’s volunteers who had just returned from a hike with the Beavers section.

11th Barry Sea Scouts group scout leader, Nicola Thompson said: “We talked about scouting – Ruth had been part of the girls nautical training corps in Porthcawl when she was younger. It’s nice to see Barry on the map; it’s always a good talking point when we meet other volunteers when camping.”

Barry Sea Scouts is looking for adult volunteers to join the group, if interested please contact Nicola via email:

Gavin & Stacey ran for three series from 13th May 2007 to 1st January 2010, and it returned for a one-off episode on Christmas Day 2019 which ended on a cliffhanger when Nessa proposed to Smithy. Fans worldwide were also left in suspense on whether Bryn (played by Rob Brydon) and his nephew Jason’s (Robert Wilfort) ‘disastrous fishing trip’ secret would ever be revealed or if Smithy accepted Nessa’s marriage proposal.
