Girls’ school campaigners go for judicial review £5,000 raised in just one week:
THE campaign group SAVE Cowbridge Old Girls School has taken the first steps towards a judicial review of the planning permission which permits the demolition of the former girls’ school in Cowbridge.
Last year, the Vale Council granted planning to demolish the existing buildings to make way for 34 housing units on the site. Since the initial application was submitted in December 2018, the campaign group has worked to seek an alternative buyer and proposal which would see the school sympathetically converted.
A campaign group spokesperson said: “Pobl Housing publicly stated their interest in taking forward the conversion scheme but instead the planning committee voted for demolition.
“The development has gained national coverage by the media, owing to the fact that it represents the first school built (1895-6) specifically for mainstream secondary education of girls across both England and Wales. It was also the first to have purpose-built science laboratories so was indeed rare for its time.
“Although planning permission for demolition was legally granted in December 2022, the council only published the documents some weeks later in January, significantly curtailing the period of time the campaign group had to launch legal proceedings. Despite this, due to the ongoing strong opposition to the demolition, we have been able to raise £5,000 in just one week to bring the case forward. A Judge will now determine whether it can progress to a full hearing.”
