Barry Town Mayor Cllr Steffan Wiliam has come up with a novel way of raising money for his charities this year.

As well as running the Cardiff Half Marathon and leaving collection boxes at his surgery events on King Square, he has decided to hold a competition to guess the Mayor’s weight.

Mayor Wiliam commented: “The whole thing was an idea concocted by myself and the late local reporter for the Glamorgan Star, Sharon Harris.

“In between lockdowns, I’ve been very active and been able to visit different people, whether that’s tea and cake with pensioners at Elm Grove or pizza and cola with young people at the Barry Youth Forum.

“Sharon teased me that I would inevitably put on weight, as all Mayors do in their year of office. I then joked with her that we should get people to try and guess what my weight will be by next May.“

Pensioners at Elm Grove, Cadoxton, welcomed the Mayor with cakes and mince pies.

Covid restrictions have made fundraising more difficult than usual so guessing my weight was a creative way of overcoming that hurdle of raising money for charities.

He concluded: “There will be some excellent prizes donated by local business for the closest answers. To take part in the competition, I want people to guess how much I’ll weigh by next May. To help, I can tell you that in this photo I was 15½ stone – so how much do you think I’ll weigh by next May when my term of office comes to an end?”

Your donations and guesses can either be dropped in at the Barry Town Council offices above the library on King Square, or you can go to the Mayor’s Facebook page and click on GoFundMe. It costs £1 for every guess you make.
