History society remembers past times in Llantwit
A PHOTOGRAPHIC record of Wine Street held by Llantwit Major Local History Society archive offers a window into the past.
The image accompanying this article (below) shows the boot and shoe shop on the right (c1910). At the time this shop was managed by Mrs Margaret Trigg supported by her daughter Maud and niece Nellie. Her husband Mr Philip Trigg was an employed mason, working in the building trade.

Living next door to the Triggs at this time in ‘Ffynondy’ was the author and Journalist Marie Trevelyn, going under her married name Mrs Emma Paslieu, her daughter Bronwen, and sister Eva Thomas.
Earlier In 1901, Margaret Trigg was living and managing a restaurant in Commercial Street and her son Walter was listed as a schoolteacher in Llantwit. Walter later enlisted in the Pioneer Battalion (Welsh Regiment) in 1915 and was promoted to First Lieutenant in charge of transport and quickly gained his Captaincy.
The present-day tenants of the shop are Elwyn and Ann-Sophie Thomas of Blue Lias Farm in St Donats. They sell seasonal fresh-farm produce from their own farm as well as other producers. The shop is open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday each week and they are shown in the small insert photo. See www.elwynsproduce.co.uk for further information.
If you have further information, it would be appreciated. Contact the History Society at either the Llantwit Major Archive Room, open on Fridays 3pm to 5pm or via email:
