Barry girl is making her mark in US athletics
RECENTLY, Gwenno Goode from Barry ran in the NCAA National Track & Field Championships at the University of Oregon, Eugene in the United States.
There were two heats of 12 athletes from various US universities in the 3,000 metres steeplechase, and Gwenno finished 20th overall in a time of 10:04.19.

NCAA – the National Collegiate Athletics Association – regulates student athletes at 1,100 universities and colleges in the US and Canada.
To qualify to run in Oregon, Gwenno had to finish in the top 12 at the NCAA (Eastern) championships at the University of North Florida, Jacksonville on 31st May. She finished in fourth place in her heat, securing the final place in the Nationals.
Gwenno has just finished as a sophomore (second year) student at La Salle University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvannia, studying Communications as her major. She was awarded a full athletics scholarship at La Salle University in August 2023.
She is also a member of Cardiff Athletics and in the past few years, she has represented Ysgol Bro Morgannwg, Cardiff Athletics and Wales at cross country and road races. She trains daily on the track, trails and gym, averaging around 120 kilometres per week. She is also a co-presenter on the university’s weekly Sportsline programme for La Salle TV.
She is currently the under-23 Welsh 3,000m Steeplechase record holder, with a time of 9:56.80 at a race in Raleigh, North Carolina in March 2025. She was awarded the La Salle ‘Student Athlete of the Year’ in May 2025.
Her coach Tyler Jakubek said: “We are so proud of Gwen qualifying for the NCAA National Championships! Shes works extremely hard and is committed to the get the most out of each race.”
