As reported in our launch edition of the Glamorgan Star (2nd July), summer has begun with a rash of rescues from the Heritage Coast.
Responsibility for spotting danger on the western end of the coast falls on the two National Coastwatch Institution (NCI) stations at St Donat’s and Porthcawl, and also Llantwit Major Coastguard.
Nick Weedon, of Porthcawl NCI, highlighted the spot that has emerged as the main danger area.
He told the Glamorgan Star: “So far this year we have dealt with five specific incidents in relation to persons being cut off in the two coves east of the main beach at Southerndown / Dunraven Bay.
“The critical time for people to become cut off is around 2.5hrs before highwater dependent on tides (Springs or Neaps). Please be aware of the tide times if you are in that area and furthermore, be aware of your final time to exit the two coves before cut-off. If you see someone in danger, ring 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
