Opticians in Barry and Cowbridge are encouraging locals to help them raise funds to support an animal rescue centre in Llanharan.
The idea came after one of the store director’s saw a post on Facebook about two puppies found locally abandoned in a bin.
Hope Rescue, which opened in 2005 and helps around 800 dogs a year, has struggled throughout the pandemic as it relies heavily on support from the community.
They reported a post-lockdown increase in people giving away their pets, with the rescue team receiving more than 90 calls from dog owners looking to hand in their pets over a four-week period.
Helen Hopgood, store director at Specsavers Barry said: “We’re proud to be doing what we can to help Hope Rescue. The charity does such wonderful work and is very close to our hearts as a lot of the Barry team have dogs.”
The stores want to raise funds for the charity, but also want to collect donations of blankets and food.
Helen added: “We have struggled with monetary donations due to people not carrying cash – but have benefited from people donating food and other things items. Also, instead of charging for small repairs, we are asking people to donate any amount they can to the charity.”
Donations to Hope Rescue can also be made via their website.
