PENCOED Cricket club’s last three matches gave them two wins – and one nail-biting loss.
The defeat came away at Llandaff Fourths, where they lost by just three runs. Table-topping Llandaff scored 255-9 off their 40 overs while Pencoed scored 252-9, also off 40 overs. Llandaff gained 20 league points and Pencoed 10.
Pencoed’s stand-in captain James Smith stepped up to the task, leading his team agonisingly close, taking four wickets and hitting 83 not out. Rahul Chaudhary supported the captain’s efforts with two wickets and 22 runs, while Tim Moore (25) and Levi McCormick (two wickets) also made contributions.
In their next fixture, Pencoed were home to Penarth Fourths and won by five wickets, taking 17 points while Penarth took seven.
Penarth batted and scored 248-5 off their 40 overs before Pencoed took 37.1 overs to score 251-5.
It was a tough day in the field for both sides as they struggled in the heat but Pencoed skipper James Smith managed to take two.
When Pencoed batted, Nigel Jordan (83) and Jack Frewen (43) put on 114 for the first wicket, building a solid foundation for the team to kick on in the chase. From there, Rhodri Owen scored 44, along with a few other double figure cameos to take them over the line and break the team’s losing streak.
Pencoed followed this win with another, this time over Abertillery, taking 19 points to Aber’s nine.
Pencoed won the toss and elected to bat first, scoring 239/8 off their 40 overs. Seven of the top eight made good contributions, with openers Nigel Jordan and Matthew Evans both scoring 33. They were followed by Jack Frewen (26), Neil Raikes (20), James Smith (38), Ashish Krishan (32 not out) and Gareth Williams (20).
In response, Abertillery could only manage 222/7 off their 40 overs.
