Double victory for Pencoed cricketers

PENCOED Cricket First XI notched up a solid home win over Pontymister & Crosskeys, scoring 216/8 over 40 overs before bowling out the visitors for 176.

Pencoed batted first and, after a steady start, slumped from 53-1 to 57-4. Ankit Singh (59) and Simon McCutcheon (27) put on 89 runs to rescue the situation. Matthew Evans (34) and Gareth Williams (22) contributed to post a decent total.

Jack Frewen was the pick of the bowling attack, taking 4 -37 while Matthew Evans added to his earlier knock by taking three wickets.

Pencoed also had a big win at Cardiff, scoring a huge 295/4 for almost maximum points.

Winning the toss and sending Pencoed in backfired for Cardiff. Matthew Evans scored a stunning, unbeaten 100-plus – his second century of the season! Jack Frewen and Ankit Singh both chipped in with 50s to set up a massive target.

Cardiff’s required run rate was over a run a ball and captain James Smith stepped up when it mattered with three quick wickets to halt the hosts’ early momentum. In the end, Cardiff fell 54 runs short at 241/6.

Pencoed took 18 points and Cardiff seven.
