Pencoed Youth surprise league leaders

Pencoed Youth 24 Glynneath Youth 19

LEAGUE leaders Glynneath arrived at Pencoed’s Recreation ground unbeaten in the Ospreys Championship.

The visitors were first on the scoreboard, taking a seven-point lead. Pencoed levelled matters on the 20-minute mark with a try from Morgan Richards, who is no stranger to the try line this season. Iwan Powell converted. Skipper Powell then put the home side ahead, intercepting smartly some 60 metres out to race away and score under the posts before adding the extras.

Despite the visitors winning the breakdown area at this juncture, it was Pencoed who led 14-7 at the interval. Glynneath then drew level in the opening minute of the second half. A Powell penalty goal then put Pencoed back into the lead at 17-14. Glynneath gained a good field position from the restart and, following a close up passive scrum, the Neath Valley side took the opportunity to work their left wing over on the blindside at the corner flag to regain the lead at 17-19.

With time running out and Pencoed under pressure in their own 22, Powell kicked clear and a fortuitous bounce saw centre Harry Wynne racing clear to outpace the desperate covering defence to score at the posts. Powell converted to make it 24-19. Pencoed then saw out the final moments to snatch a hard-earned victory.

The Pencoed players can now look forward to early July when they tour Belgium, the 20-plus squad anticipate playing two games in the Antwerp region.
