Pencoed’s promotion hopes dashed by rain on final day
Ebbw Vale 2nd 176(36.0) v Pencoed CC 177-3(27.0)
PENCOED First XI travelled to Ebbw Vale and won by seven wickets.
Ashish Krishan made a key contribution with a devastating spell of 6-12 which included a hat-trick during a four-wicket maiden as Ebbw Vale Seconds were bowled out for 176. Three more wickets were taken by Gareth Williams and the bowlers were supported by an all-round team effort in the field.
Pencoed batted and opener Nigel Jordan batted right through to the end with a fine, unbeaten knock of 73, while Scott McCutcheon’s 34 and Neil Raikes’ 32 not out provided great support in a comfortable victory.
Ebbw Vale took five points while Pencoed took 20. This took Pencoed to fourth in league 10.
TAW Seconds
The following weekend, Pencoed welcomed table toppers TAW Seconds to Felindre Road but the visitors lived up to their reputation. Pencoed were bowled out for 217, using 38.5 of their allocated overs. TAW passed this for the loss of six wickets, using 36.5 of their overs. Pencoed took eight points, with TAW Seconds taking 20.
Pencoed at Bridgend
Bridgend won the toss and batted but were bowled out for 218. Pencoed responded with 221 for 8 in 38.1 overs, winning by two wicket and claiming 20 points, with Bridgend taking 9.
Rain hits final game
Pencoed welcomed Abergavenny Thirds but the weather frustrated them. After the game was washed out, the teams took five points each. This dashed Pencoed’s promotion hopes, as they finished fourth with 242 points. Congratulations go to TAW CC, taking the title with 284 points.
The Bank Holiday past and present cricket match was also hit by the weather and was cancelled but the barbecue went ahead and the live bands were entertaining. The cricket club will have their presentation night on 18th September.
