Pensioners stranded in Poets Corner after bus route changes

By MARCUS STEAD - News Reporter

ANGRY bus users staged a demonstration outside the Penarth Town Council meeting on Thursday, 11 September, to protest against changes to the number 93 route.

The amended route no longer encompasses the streets around Wordsworth Avenue, known as Poets Corner, meaning passengers living in the area must now walk to The Dingle bus stop if they wish to travel on the 93 service.

Protestors braved the stormy weather to highlight their case.

The walk to The Dingle bus stop requires people to make their way through a poorly lit lane and navigate the steps across Dingle Road railway bridge.

The protest was organised by retired Detective Inspector Paul Fenton, who launched a petition that he says gained 500 signatures. He said: “We are calling on the Vale Council to restore the 93 bus service in Poets Corner immediately.

“The number 7 route now runs through Poets Corner instead, but this is an insufficient replacement. “It doesn’t run at all on weekends. Apart from that, it’s OK if you’re heading towards Cardiff, but it’s not much use if you want to go in the other direction because it terminates at Windsor Terrace, whereas the 93 goes on to Dinas Powys, Sully and Barry.

“The weather on Thursday was absolutely foul and we got a decent turnout under the circumstances.

“A lot of the people who would’ve liked to attend the demonstration couldn’t do so, not least because they didn’t have transport to get there and back. Some of them are elderly or vulnerable, and it wouldn’t have been sensible for them to be out in the wind and rain.

“Good public transport links such as the 93 bus are vital for older people, the disabled, the vulnerable and the young, as it allows them to get out and about, and enjoy a healthy quality of life.”

The Vale Council, who are responsible for matters relating to bus services, were approached for comment.
