In pictures: Princess of Wales visits Tŷ Hafan children’s hospice as she is named patron
The Princess of Wales visited Tŷ Hafan Children’s Hospice in Sully on Thursday, 30 January, where it was announced she has become new patron of the centre, following in the footsteps of both the late Princess Diana and King Charles.
This role marks a significant continuation of royal patronage for the charity, which has been providing specialised care for children with life-limiting conditions since its opening in 1999.
During her visit, the Princess engaged with children, families, and staff at the hospice, participating in activities such as a ‘stay and play’ session and leaving her handprint on a wall, symbolising her connection to the institution. She also spent time in the memorial garden, interacting with bereaved families.
The visit is part of the Princess’s gradual return to public engagements following her chemotherapy treatment, highlighting her ongoing commitment to charities that focus on children’s welfare.
Her patronage was celebrated as an inspiration for both the children and their families, as well as for the staff and volunteers involved with Tŷ Hafan.
Irfon Rees, Chief Executive of Tŷ Hafan, said: “We are deeply honoured that Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales has become Patron of Tŷ Hafan and it was an absolute pleasure to welcome Her Royal Highness to our hospice for the first time today.
“As our Patron, Her Royal Highness will be an inspiration for children with life-shortening conditions and their families, our dedicated staff and volunteers and everyone who so generously supports us.
“No parent ever imagines that their child’s life will be short. Sadly this is the reality facing thousands of families in Wales. We can’t stop this happening, but together we can make sure that no one lives their child’s short life alone.”
“The wellbeing of children and their families has always been close to The Princess’ heart. The first patronage Her Royal Highness took on on becoming a Member of The Royal Family was EACH (East Anglia’s Children’s Hospice) and she maintains a close relationship with the organisation to this day. The Princess is looking forward to building a similar relationship with Tŷ Hafan and the children and families it serves in Wales.”
