Protest group gets ready to party

By Philip Irwin

Opponents of the controversial Barry incinerator are getting ready to celebrate now that its demolition is underway – although they do have some reservations.

Dennis Clarke, the vice chair of DIAG (Docks Incinerator Action Group) told the Glamorgan Star: “The present situation with the Barry Incinerator is that it is being torn apart – save for the large buildings that Associated British Ports would like to keep – notwithstanding there is no planning permission.

“Apparently, there is still at least two months work to take away those parts that are not wanted by the Port but for the 10,500 signatories to the petition that was lodged against the project, the removal of the incinerator will be a very welcome sight,

“One of the last things to come down will be the 43-metre high stack. Many of us hope to be allowed to be present to watch it happen. That will be the time when we will want to party!”

He continued: “This was a battle that involved large parts of the town. It began in 2008 when the Vale Council argued that the project did not require an Environmental Statement.

“The positive thing to come out of the dispute is the belief it gave so many people that there is a lot of truth in ‘people power’. It was obvious to the people of the town that the incinerator was the wrong thing in the wrong place. The people knew that it would pollute the town’s air for many years to come. The people knew the council was wrong and were prepared to take it on.”

He added that one subject to look at in the future was just how much money was wasted defending the decision.

Mr Clarke added: “But this is not a time to dwell on negative observations. The demolition has begun, it is sufficiently advanced to convince us that the battle has been won and our air will not be poisoned by this waste disposal facility.

“DIAG thanks the public for the continuing support and congratulates the public for its belief in the system, that the right outcome can be achieved when so many people demand it – although in total it has been 18 years of worry.”
