Search is on for Welsh-speaking paddle boarders:
MENTER Bro Morgannwg, which promotes the use of the Welsh language in the Vale, has joined with Barry-based Island SUP to find three Welsh speakers to train as Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) instructors.
After a series of paddleboarding sessions at Jackson’s Bay as part of this year’s ‘Summer of Fun’ programme, organised by Menter Bro Morgannwg, the two organisations are looking for young people aged 16 – 25 to run SUP activities in the Vale.
Michael Goode from Menter Bro Morgannwg said: “Our paddleboarding sessions were very popular with young people, and we ended up purchasing some paddleboards as a result. However, we soon realised that we didn’t have any Welsh speaking SUP instructors.”
As well as the ability to speak Welsh, applicants will need to be confident paddling a SUP, able to swim and to commit to ASI level 2 training (four days) and to complete 10 – 20 hours assisting / observation with a qualified instructor. The ASI (Academy of Surfing Instructors) level 2 course costs £540 but will be offered for free to the three chosen candidates.
Kerry Baker, from Island SUP said that the three Welsh speaking SUP instructors would help out at our club nights and junior sessions.
