Secretary of State for Wales visits Barry

THE UK Government Cabinet member David TC Davies recently visited Barry to see the site of the Marina that was recently awarded £20 million from the Government’s levelling-up fund.

Vale MP Alun Cairns welcomed the Secretary of State, saying: “I was delighted to announce the success of our Marina bid, particularly having pressed its case across the Vale and in Parliament for years now. The Marina will help to attract investment and is part of my plan for the regeneration of Barry. This is levelling up in action.”

The £20 million for a Marina in Barry comes on top of £20 million already secured for town regeneration as part of the UK Government’s Towns Fund.

David TC Davies commented: “I was delighted to be in Barry to hear about the benefits that a Marina will bring to the town, showing how our investments across Wales are making a huge difference to communities. This latest funding is just one of many of Alun’s achievements for his constituents.”

In November 2023 the UK Government announced that Barry will receive £19.8 million from the ‘Levelling Up’ fund to deliver a marina for the town.

When announced, Alun Cairns MP said: “I promised a marina for Barry at the last election and I am delighted that we have secured the funding. Barry is a town that has so much to offer, and I have continued to press its importance locally and in Westminster.

“I knew it would take a lot of hard work, but I have been determined to deliver this investment. Following years of making the case for a marina in parliament alongside countless meetings, I am delighted we have got this over the line.

“When I launched my survey two years ago, an overwhelming majority of local residents backed my campaign for a marina. Thank you all for helping to deliver the next stage of Barry’s regeneration.”

“This project will be a major boost for the whole of the town. The marina will draw visitors and tourists to Barry and will truly make a difference to the area.”

When Barry missed out on funding in January of last year, Mr Cairns told The Glamorgan Star that a second round of funding was expected within the next 12 months. He said he was confident that Barry would have a good chance.
