Portuguese Man O’War is spotted in Porthcawl area
Beachgoers are being warned of sightings of a Portuguese Man O’War within the Porthcawl area.
In a social media post, the Porthcawl National Coastwatch Institution said: “These blighters have been spotted in our area, Portuguese Man-of-war. Please keep well clear and don’t let animals or children touch them.”
Resembling a jellyfish and nicknamed the ‘Floating Terror’, stings from the marine invertebrate can be powerful and painful resulting in severe inflammation of the skin. In some rare cases, one sting is enough to kill even when the creature is dead.
Named after its resemblance to an 18th century Portuguese warship under full sail, the Man O’War is recognised by it’s blue, pink or violet balloon-like float that can rise up to six inches above the waterline. They are unable to propel themselves and are instead pushed along by the wind.
