Sport – Late penalty from 20-point Gavin seals win

Pencoed 25, Brynamman 24

This was a very closely fought affair throughout, with both teams looking to offset opening day defeats.

Despite both sides’ endeavour to move the ball wide during the opening half, only one try resulted from their efforts. Sustained close up pressure from Pencoed saw Rhys Bargery cross at the posts and the home side led 13-9 at the interval, Gavin Henson having added the conversion and two penalty goals. Joe Davies replied with three penalties for the visitors.

The second half followed very much in the same pattern, with neither side able to establish dominance. Pencoed held a slender lead for most of the second half through three further penalties from Henson against the opening try for Brynamman from Israel Adeyemi and a Davies penalty goal and the match was wide open at 22-17.

Going into the final 10 minutes the Amman Valley side took the lead for the first time in the match with a try from Gareth Drewson, converted by Davies. With Pencoed just having received a yellow card, and now 22-24 down, a second defeat looked a distinct possibility. However, they returned to the attack, winning a vital penalty some 35 metres out in the dying seconds. A palpable hush descended over the Recreation Ground as Henson prepared for goal and the former British Lion and Welsh International slotted the match winning penalty with a calm authority – to the delight of his teammates and supporters. Aaron Burroughs was voted the players’ man of match award.
