Rugby star supports Cowbridge church’s foodbank efforts
WELSH rugby legend Rhys Williams is appearing at Holy Cross Church’s fundraising event for the Vale Foodbank, at Cowbridge Rugby Club on Friday 21st February.
It has been 20 years since Rhys Williams scored a key try against Scotland that would see Wales go on to secure a 2005 Grand Slam victory.

Reverend Duncan Ballard said: “Unprecedented numbers of individuals and families are suffering with the cost-of-living crisis. As a church, we collect regularly for the foodbank. For example, we raised over £600 in December.
“However, we realised the need to do something bigger and better as donations tend to fall off sharply in the spring. That’s why we are delighted that Rhys Williams and Graham Daniels, director of Christians in Sport, will support our fundraising event.”
Becky Morgan, manager of the Vale Foodbank, said: “There are pockets of poverty everywhere you go in the Vale and over the past 12 months we are seeing more and more people needing our support. Even working families are struggling and are looking to the foodbank for help – but donations are decreasing”.
Becky oversees eight foodbank centres in the Vale that feed around 100 families a week, providing emergency food parcels which last for three days. The foodbank is there for desperate times, but the aim is to encourage people to become independent again. The voucher system ensures people will be connected to referral agencies that can also offer advice and support as well as receiving food.
In Barry on the last Wednesday of every month, the Community Connect Cafe at Coastlands Church, Tennyson Road, CF62 9TN, runs drop-in sessions, 9.30am to 12pm. Representatives from organisations such as Citizens Advice, Hafod Housing, Utility Warehouse, Welsh Water and Speak Easy Legal Services give support and advice.

For anyone wishing to attend the charity evening, support the fundraising and understand where Christian values fit into the world of sport, tickets are available from Howard Perks email or call 07762102569.
