Sully Centurions put together a fine away win

THE Sully Centurions’ First XI carried their recent winning form into the penultimate match of the season at the home of Pontymister & Cross Keys.

The game got off to a fantastic start when opening bowlers Nathan Cuddihy and Tom Davies both picked up a wicket and both opening batsmen were back in the pavilion with just two runs on the board. However, the third wicket pair of Ali and Ajmal turned the match on its head with a scintillating partnership of 120, which finally came to an end when Ajmal fell to Jake Griffett for 30, via a fine Tom Davies catch.

Ali continued getting runs and he and new partner Baker added another 50 runs before Baker was dismissed by Ricki Griffett. Ali finally fell to a Ricki Griffett catch from Tom Davies’ bowling, for a well-made 94, with the score on 212. Two more late wickets, one to Davies and one via a run out from Kieron Ferriday, left the home side on 216 for 7 at the end of the 40 overs.

In reply, Centurions lost the early wicket of Ricki Griffett, but a half century stand from Kieron Ferriday and Shae Ellis put them back on track, before Ellis was bowled by Shinde for 29. Enter Lloyd Bruce, who joined with Ferriday in a partnership of 57, before Ferriday fell – bowled by Baker for 48.

Bruce was joined by Gabe Howard, who helped push the score along to 176 before departing for 13. Then Bruce survived a run out scare before two wickets fell with the sore on 188. But Bruce, who finished on 65 not out and Davies (10 not out) steered Sully home with two overs to spare.

Pontymister & Cross Keys 216-7, Sully Centurions 217-6

On Saturday, the final day of the season, the First XI are at home to Ebbw Vale, while the Second XI travel to Monmouth.
