The history of the ‘Demon Drink’ in Barry
Historical talk looks at the town’s past
A HISTORICAL talk entitled The Demon Drink, looking at Barry’s past will take place on Tuesday, 4th July, at 2pm in the Glamorgan Archives.
It will be presented by the Victorian Barry Experience, which was founded in 2018 by Nic and Shirley Hodges, a husband and wife team passionate about sharing their extensive collection of memorabilia related to all things Barry.
Through a combination of old photographs, newspaper articles, and police reports, Nic leads history walks and talks that offer a fascinating glimpse into the early days of Barry. Visitors can learn about the town’s community, who came from near and far to work in the docks and they also explore some of the key social issues that shaped life in Barry during this period.
The Demon Drink explores the conflict between those who enjoyed a tipple and the temperance league. This talk is both shocking and entertaining, bringing local history to life.

Commenting about his upcoming talk Nic Hodges said: “The Victorian era—a fascinating period in history indeed. The struggle between those who enjoyed their libations and those who condemned alcohol was one of the many intriguing aspects of that time.
“It’s always interesting to delve into the stories of colourful maverick characters who lived and worked in Barry during that era.
“It’s a fun talk celebrating the history of the town.”
