‘Time capsule’ found in old chapel
The old Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in Wesley Street, Llantwit Major, is being converted and in the roof the developers recently discovered a ‘time capsule’ glass jar.
The jar contained an interesting programme of a concert in 1876, held in aid of building a School Room at the back of the main building. The Sunday School must have been very well attended as it not only taught religion but maths, science and crafts.
John Wesley visited the Vale and from then there was a strong following in the area. The group originally met in Llanmaes and later moved to ‘The Angel Inn’ in Wine Street (later the Post Office and now Tyr Poste).
The Chapel was completed in 1897 and Services were held in English and Welsh. There are many references to religious and social events in the chapel in Hughie Andrews’ diaries in the 1930s to 1950s, which are recorded in the early volumes of Aspects of Llantwit Major under ‘A view from the Post Office’.
The Jehovah’s Witnesses acquired the building in the 1980s and it became the Kingdom Hall. Now it is to be a house.
The Archive Room has some of these publications, and photographs, maps and documents of the town. The room is in the Old School in Wine Street and is open to the public on Friday afternoons 3.00pm to 5.00pm. Ring the bell on the door for entry. (Sorry, but there is no disabled access).
