SPORT: Five tries for Barry – but Rhydyfelin hang on
Admiral National League Division One East Central

Rhydyfelin 41 Barry RFC 33:
A SECOND-HALF fightback by Barry earned a well-deserved bonus point. It was not quite enough to pick up a losing bonus point as well, but there were plenty of positives.
The Bombers were undone during the first half. After taking a second-minute lead, they spent much of the remainder of the half defending as Rhydyfelin took advantage of indiscipline and errors to rack up five tries before Barry managed to claw their way back into the game with a second try on the stroke of half-time.
With Rhydyfelin opening the scoring in the second half, and stretching their lead to 24 points, a comfortable home win looked to be on the cards but Barry had other ideas.
The interval message from head coach Liam Scott had been simple. “Cut the errors out and play in their half.” Which Barry did. The pack was reshuffled, errors largely eliminated, and the game taken to the opposition.
“They responded well,” said Scott. “It was a bit of a mountain at half-time. But we just kept at it and at it, and scored five tries away from home. There were lots of positives. If we tighten discipline and cut out the errors, it’s a different result.”
James Walsh gave Barry a second-minute lead, rounding off a passing move following a scrum, Owen Rees converting. Rhydyfelin then chalked up five tries before Barry replied, Alyn Evans making the most of a tap penalty from Tom Perry just before the interval.
Another tap penalty from Perry, in the 56th minute, ended with Ashton Allen getting the touchdown, Perry converting. Rhydyfelin quickly replied with their seventh try before Evans got his second try from a catch and drive in the 71st minute, Perry again on target with the conversion.
Rhydyfelin were now a man down, Sam Studley, back in action after injury, came off the bench, lasting only a couple of minutes before getting a red card for what appeared to be a punch as Barry responded to an ill-judged tackle.
The last word went to Barry, Walsh gathering the ball inside his own half and accelerating through the home defence, bursting clear to touch down under the posts, Perry again converting.
