Cup action takes centre stage
It was the divisional cups that took centre stage in the last weekend in March with action in both the ASRS Cup and Supporters Cup.
BV upset Island Marine with a fine 3-2 victory at the Butts to put them into the ASRS Cup semi-finals.
Davies put Island Marine in front before Frost quickly levelled for BV. Bowsher then restored Marine’s lead before a Byrne red card reduced Marine to 10 men. With 14 minutes remaining, Ingham equalised from the spot for BV before a dramatic late winner from Mathew James in the 91st minute sent BV into the final four.
No such drama in the other tie as AFC Rhoose eased into the semi-finals with a 5-0 triumph over Barry Athletic. Goals from Liam Butcher, Bolton, Joe Butcher and a Bevan double secured a fine win in clinical fashion.
In the Supporters Cup, top of the league Sully Sports hosted second place Cwm Talwg in a cracking cup tie that went all the way to penalties. Kirke had put Talwg ahead in the first half but Cottle equalised with two minutes left on the clock. Extra time couldn’t separate them and it was down to the dreaded penalty kicks. Talwg keeper Wakefield made two fine saves in the shoot-out and Kirke then dispatched the winning spot kick to put Cwm Talwg into the semis.
Holton Road B needed extra time to see off a stubborn BV Reserves. A goalless 90 minutes saw an extra 30 required and Holton B finally opened the scoring in the 102nd minute through Angove before Thomas sealed the tie in the 111th minute and put Holton Road B in the semi-finals.
Rhoose Social booked their semi-final spot with a 4-1 win over St Athan B. Rowland put Social in front before Sammarco equalised but Owen restored Social’s lead right on the stroke of half time. Further goals from an OG and Harries saw Social ease into the semis.
Only one league game this week in the Premier Division as Cardiff Airport came from behind against St Athan to win 2-1. Sean Lucas gave St Athan a first half lead but an og levelled the game before Stradling grabbed the winner 15 minutes before time.
Next week, it’s a mixture of cup and league fixtures as the season races towards its climax.
