RECENTLY, 23 volunteers from across Pencoed gathered at Jokers Field for a morning of community action with the Pencoed Trailblazers.
The volunteers worked from 10am to 12pm and uncovered a long-lost right of way, collecting an astonishing 165 kilos of litterin the process. The team cleared 30 metres of overgrown public path, revealing a stile and route that had been swallowed by dense shrubbery and unused for over 25 years. The entrance to the field was also widened to improve access for residents.
Among the volunteers was Sarah Murphy MS, who joined the litter-picking effort and praised the group’s community spirit. Members of Pencoed Men’s Shed, who meet every Thursday, 6pm to 8pm at Pencoed Pavilion, brought their tools and good humour to the task.
Jokers Field, owned by the education department of Bridgend County Borough Council (BCBC), was originally earmarked in the 1970s for a school to support the expanding west Pencoed housing estate. That plan never materialised, and the land has since become a spot for dog walking, play, and quiet reflection.
Now,a campaign led by local resident Stuart Bain, aims to secure the field’s future. He is calling on BCBC to voluntarily designate the land as a town green, ensuring it remains protected and accessible for future generation. The land has been left unallocated in BCBC’s Local Development Plan (LDP),meaning there is uncertainty around its future purpose.
The Trailblazers meet on the third Saturday of every month from 10am to 12pm, rotating across different sites in the area. The next event will take place on Saturday 20th December. For more details, follow the Pencoed Trailblazers on Facebook.
