Going ‘Beyond the Clouds’ in Barry
Event has been held.
A FREE Kite Festival to mark the summer solstice is being held at The Knap, Barry this weekend.
Members of the public are encouraged to arrive at 5.30pm on Saturday, 21st June for Beyond the Clouds, which organisers say will be a celebration of nature, peace and friendship for all ages.

The event is being arranged by Art4u, a nonprofit organisation that aims to share art with the community. Its founder Glyn Pooley said: “We first staged the Beyond the Clouds event in 2010, and about 30 or 40 people turned up. It’s been held every year since, and last year we had around 250 to 300 people.
“It’s a real community event and this year we’ll be joined by visual artists who’ll be showing their work under the shelters for people to enjoy.
“As the demand was so great last year, there will be a selection of kites available for people to purchase, so nobody will miss out on the fun.”
Beyond the Clouds is now in its 16th year, and Glyn explained what inspired him to instigate the event: “It began with me thinking back to a childhood memory and the simple joy I got from flying kites. The way it’s grown over the years is incredible.
“It’s a real intergenerational event. We have toddlers and pensioners mixing together, enjoying simple fun flying kites, smiling and laughing. It’s wonderful to see.”

Glyn particularly likes the way in which the event appeals to people from different backgrounds: “I’ve noticed in the last few years that we’ve had a lot of people in attendance who are of Indian origin, and kite flying is part of their culture.
“The key message is that everyone’s welcome, no matter who you are, how old you are or where you’re from. We gather in a peaceful setting in the spirit of friendship to fly our kites.”
The event is free to attend, but there will be an opportunity to make a voluntary donation to Art4u.
